The
answer depends upon two factors: -
- Whether the Insurance Company feels it needs extra information
about you - and this decision will be based on the information
on your application form (which you have to complete if
you decide to proceed).
- Whether the broker processing your application (typically
your Insurance Broker) has the systems to expedite your
application.
About 33% of all applications are accepted immediately
by the Insurance Company. This will have been assessed
by a computer, based on information from your application.
All other applications will experience some element of delay.
This is because the application has to be considered by an
Underwriter. This may mean that your application is accepted
but is delayed by a week or two - but it can also lead to
a request for more information about you. If this is the case,
your application will be kept on hold until this additional
information is received.
The most common information requested by the insurance companies,
relates to medical queries. They may ask your GP for information
or ask you to have a medical (which the Insurance Company
pays for). Unfortunately, the hard-pressed GP is the most
common reason for an extended delay. Some are very slow to
respond to a request for medical information.
Another common delay is that many applicants are slow to
respond to a request for extra information.
